The Open Access policy of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation requires that publication of Foundation-funded research will be open access. The Foundation has established outstanding open access and publication systems to fully support researchers with open access publication. HBGDki publications will all be open access and will benefit from the Foundation’s systems.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation established an Open Access policy that became effective on January 1, 2015.

The policy requires that all Foundation-funded research be published as open access, according to the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 General License (CC BY 4.0) or equivalent license.

The Foundation has established outstanding publishing services to fully support researchers with manuscript submission to journals and compliance with the policy, including:

  • Open Access Team members to answer questions and provide support: openaccess@gatesfoundation.org
  • The Foundation’s commitment to pay reasonable publication fees for open access publication.
  • Chronos, the Foundation’s publishing service that helps manage manuscript submission and open access fee payment (Figure 1): https://chronos.gatesfoundation.org
  • Chronos Support Team members to answer questions and help navigate Chronos: support@chronos-oa.com
